Wäre Ian Bonhôtes hoffnungsvolles Heldenepos ein fiktiver Film, würde es wahrscheinlich verrissen werden. Zu perfekte Charaktere, zu viele idealistische Phrasen und überhaupt scheinen die Wendungen zu unwahrscheinlich. Es ist die Story eines hochtalentierten Schauspielers, der mit einer ihm wie auf den Leib geschnittenen Leinwandrolle des berühmtesten aller Comic-Superhelden buchstäblich und visuell zum Star aufsteigt. Nur um dann, als seine Karriere ihren ersten Zenit überschritten zu haben scheint, durch einen verheerenden Unfall nahezu alles zu verlieren.
Doch Dank der unerschütterlichen Liebe seiner Frau und der Verantwortung für seine idealen Kinder findet er neuen Mut. Der Einsatz für verbesserte Forschung und die Rechte von Menschen mit Behinderung gibt ihm ein neues Lebensziel und führt zum Aufstieg wie Phoenix aus der Asche. Letztes ist der Titel der letzten Doku Ian Bonhôtes. Der bewies bereits in der Chronik der Paralympischen Spiele sein Faible und Feingespür für inspirierende Geschichten vom Überwinden sozialer und körperlicher Hindernisse.
Die tragische Biografie Christopher Reeves, dessen Reitunfall 1995 in einer Lähmung vom Hals abwärts resultierte, erweist sich somit als das perfekte Material für Bonhôte und seinen Co-Regisseur und Drehbuchautor Peter Ettedgui. Als Schauspieler-Klan wissen Reeves, seine Frau Dana und auch die Kinder um die enorme Wirkung von Worten und öffentlichen Auftritten. Jene sind stets so perfekt ausgeführt, dass die Frage bleibt, wie viel mehr der nur vage angedeuteten dunklen Momente sich hinter der strahlenden Heldenfassade verbergen.
Wie in ihren vergangenen Dokumentarfilmen wissen Peter Ettedgui und Ian Bonhôte genau, welche Geschichte sie erzählen wollen. Es ist jenes erbauliche Epos vom Überwinden körperlicher Defizite, von moralischer Stärke, Familienwerten und dem Appell an das Gute im Menschen, den das Publikum – das US-amerikanische ganz besonders – liebt. Wohl auch deshalb sind die interessantesten und bewegendsten Momente seiner biografischen Hymne die flüchtigen Blicke hinter das ideale Image auf Schmerz, Angst und Zweifel. Aber Superman muss Superman bleiben.
