Some people don’t want anything new – just a better version of what they already had. And if better isn’t available, then fancier, more expensive with a few prominent names attached to it. This is the decidedly unromantic message of Ol Parker’s newest romantic comedy effort which is neither romantic nor does it seem like much of an effort. That isn’t to say that stale story of former husband and wife David (George Clooney) and Georgia (Julia Roberts) who rekindle their mutual love on a mission to thwart their daughter’s wedding achieves the ease and facility needed to elevate the vapid plot.
A glance at the premise and promotion material is enough to betray not only the ending but every turn on the overlong way. The latter leads the divorcees to beautiful Bali where her freshly graduated offspring Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) has fallen for local seaweed farmer Gede (Maxime Bouttier) on a vacation trip with best friend Wren. Billie Lourd is the sole source of humor as party-loving companion in a surreal sublime setting. Had Parker and co-writer Daniel Pipski the nerve to satirize the phony flawlessness or parental privilege, their star couple’s comedic chemistry could amount to more than posh potential.
